Cambodia Expresses Solidarity with Laos Amid Typhoon Yagi Impact

PHNOM PENH, September 17, 2024 — Prime Minister Hun Manet has sent a message to his Lao counterpart, Sonexay Siphandone, expressing Cambodia’s solidarity with Laos during the challenges posed by Typhoon Yagi.

In his message, dated September 14, Hun Manet acknowledged the significant damage caused by the typhoon in northern Lao provinces, particularly the severe flooding affecting Luang Namtha province. He also highlighted reports of rapidly rising water levels along the Mekong River in Vientiane, prompting authorities to take immediate action.

“In Luang Namtha province alone, 35 villages and special economic zones have been flooded, with homes, vehicles, and livestock destroyed. At least one person has lost their life, and a hospital has been evacuated,” the Prime Minister wrote.

Hun Manet noted that heavy rains are forecasted to continue until September 16, but expressed confidence in the measures being taken by authorities in Vientiane to address the flood risks, including personnel mobilization, floodgate inspections, and infrastructure protection efforts.

“On behalf of the Government and people of Cambodia, I want to convey that the Cambodian people stand shoulder-to-shoulder in solidarity with their Lao neighbors during this difficult time,” the Prime Minister emphasized.
